Scams eBay know about and yet do nothing about

Before we go into detail about the various scams on eBay lets see how eBay deal with these scams.

Ebay 'Claim' to Have Fixed Security Hole Exploited by 'Vladuz' Ebay has claimed to have fixed a security hole on their front page that allowed scammers to hijack Ebay accounts. There has been no comment to verify if the potential to redirect within listings has been fixed.

The security hole has recently been infamously exploited by a Romanian hacker known as "Vladuz." The security hole is thought to be responsible for a recent upsurge in the number of hijacked Ebay accounts.

Ebay has been rapped for not being more forthcoming about security vulnerabilities. Many users have also complained about Ebay's "heavy-handed" tactics, such as suspending users who have asked questions about security. full story

What about eBays views on shill bidding.

To help keep the eBay community safe, enhance bidder privacy, and protect our members from fraudulent emails, only you and the seller of the item can view your User ID in bid history. Other members will see anonymous names.

And silly me was thinking Bidder1, Bidder2 was used because so many people had been caught out by other members biding on their own items and sophisticated software could track this activity down but we are safe now because even Bidder1 & Bidder2 are now being replaced by the ‘Private Buyer’ who needs protection even when they are not buying porn however here I can reveal Shill bidding is very much alive and eBay have already been informed by other members about this group and yet fail to do anything about it.

Maybe eBay would like to explain why I can link a scam artist back to the accounts listed below and yet eBay admit they were all opened using fake address but are unable to link them all together. eBay redirection ruse reloaded

18 month-old security flaw still remains unfixed

A redirection script error on eBay's site remains open to abuse 18 months after The Register first reported it. The flaw - actively exploited in phishing scams since February 2005 - creates a means to make fraudulent emails look more convincing. Shortly after publishing a report on the problem, eBay assured us that it had plugged the hole. Despite this the site remains open to abuse through the same back door, as an email from Reg reader Adrien this week reminds us. full story

I can not begin to remember how many emails I have sent to eBay regarding script injection of it’s pages and nine times out of ten times I didn’t even get a response and was lucky if I even got a computer generated thank you and yet the internet is awash with stories of people being conned due to script injection so in the end i even started to post lists of hijacked pages in eBays forum

Click on an eBay auction listing, and you could get an unwanted result: a fake eBay login page, created by scammers looking to pilfer your username and password. With about 181 million users worldwide, eBay is arguably the world's most popular online marketplace. As such, the San Jose, California, company, with its online payment unit PayPal, is among the biggest targets for online scammers -- including phishers. full story

I have a very good reason to take issue with the figure of 181 million users but that’s another story however I have contacted eBay about fake login pages as documented here and was not at all surprised by their lack of response.

Maybe the Police or trading standards get a better response from eBay than us mere mortals by using eBays special law enforcement page that would you believe even contains a fax number.
